The parsedicom module reads the files in the /nidb/dicomincoming directory, determines if they are valid dicom files, parses them, and archives them. It associates dicom files with existing subjects, studies, and series, and it will create new subjects, studies, or series if they do not already exist.

The module will also create thumbnails of the middle slice of a volume and an animated gif of the slices (spaced at 10ms for structural, 5ms for functional) at 50% size of the original image. Certain EPI sequences are hard-coded to select a single slice to create a cine animated gif instead of the entire mosaic image.

parsedicom can be run from the command line, without any environment variables using

cd /nidb/programs

Subject UIDs are randomly generated until a UID is found that does not already exist in NIDB.
